Reactive Trader is our FX trading showcase application – we use it to demonstrate the type of applications we build, and the best practices we like to follow in terms of UI development, desktop strategy and user experience design. It also allows us to experiment with new technologies we could leverage for the benefit of our clients, of which PWAs are a great example.
PWAs have been around for a while on Apple and Android mobile devices, and allowed web apps to be added to a phone or tablet’s home screen. They can then be launched outside of a traditional browser, and have the same experience as a natively installed application.
Based on web standards, and supported by the major browsers from Google and Microsoft, PWAs can now also be installed on desktops as well. To make an app installable, it needs to meet certain requirements, including having an application manifest and a service worker.
For those desktops that support it, we have been able to create a first-class experience running Reactive Trader as a PWA, including a custom install prompt, and the ability to pop out windows and receive notifications.
Please see the release notes on GitHub for the full list of changes in this version, and be on the lookout for our forthcoming blog about turning Reactive Trader into a PWA.
