As you may know, if you’ve been following us for some time, we host an annual Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Festival at Adaptive, inviting experts to discuss a broad spectrum of DEI topics. Our goal is to raise awareness, spark conversations, and drive change within the company. This year, we’re leveraging these insightful sessions to create content that can reach a broader audience and become helpful to others. In line with Pride Month, we’re thrilled to delve into the story of Richard Mitchell and Lady Red Velvet.

Richard is a primary school teacher who truly loves his job. Our paths crossed when he came to our Barcelona office to lead a team-building activity. He is a bundle of joy and enthusiasm, and his infectious energy instantly captivated us. During the day, Richard is dedicated to educating children in Infant & Primary school, but when the sun sets, he transforms into Lady Red Velvet, a renowned Drag Queen in Barcelona´s vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. Wearing high heels, glittering gowns, and stunning makeup, Lady Red Velvet dazzles audiences with her performances.

However, Richard’s alter ego is more than just a spectacle. Lady Red Velvet seamlessly blends entertainment with advocacy, promoting equality and diversity through her shows. This dual life allows Richard to impact lives both in the classroom and on the stage, making him a unique and inspiring figure.

With over 16,000 euros raised for a wide range of charities near and far, both Richard and Lady Red Velvet are making an impact in school and society. In an attempt to destigmatize the profession and bring it closer to our lives, we invited Richard to attend our 2023 Diversity and Inclusion Festival and asked him… can a Drag Queen change the world? And here is what we learned.

More Than Glitz: Drag Queens as Change Drivers

According to Wikipedia, a drag queen is a person, usually male, who uses drag clothing and makeup to imitate and often exaggerate female gender signifiers and gender roles for entertainment purposes.

However, drag queens are not just about glitz and glamour; they are influential change-makers who use their platform to advocate for a more inclusive and accepting society. Their performances challenge societal norms and stereotypes, promoting a deeper understanding and acceptance of diverse identities. By embracing their own identities and expressing themselves authentically, drag performers encourage others to do the same, addressing important topics like gender stereotypes and societal expectations.

Attending drag shows offers a unique opportunity to experience the power of acceptance and learn more about the LGBTQ+ community. For those with limited exposure to this vibrant community, these shows provide a firsthand look at the talent, passion, and humanity that drag performers embody.

Coming out as a drag queen or as an LGBTQ+ member in the workplace can be a significant challenge. Richard Mitchell is an art and drama teacher in Barcelona who is originally from the UK. During the day he teaches children in Infant & Primary but by night he transforms into Lady Red Velvet, a well-known Drag Queen in the LGBTQ+ Scene in Barcelona. Wearing high-heels, glittering gowns and stunning makeup, this performer may seem like your usual drag queen but she also combines her responsibilities in school with Equality & Diversity within her shows.

With over 16000 euros raised for a wide range of charities near and far, as well as huge advancements being made in school, both Richard and Lady Red Velvet are making an impact in a way very few saw possible.
